STOCKTON, CA - Alex Serrano is the latest young man to join the Stockton Police Department, but he won't need much time getting to know the streets of the city.  The 23-year-old Serrano is from those very streets.

"A lot of my friends passed away, got killed from the violence in Stockton.  I didn't want to take the same path," said Serrano shortly before he was sworn in by Chief of Police Eric Jones.

Serrano said it was getting involved with the department's youth activities boxing program at 14 that helped steer him clear of dangerous behavior.

"I struggled in high school, but youth activities kept me out of trouble after school, and off the streets," he said.

Serrano will need another three weeks of training before hitting the streets, but he's anxious to begin that assignment and just as anxious to be an example of succeeding where success isn't common.

"I want to go and talk to the youth and tell them there's more.  Anything's possible. Just put your mind to it," said Serrano.
