MAGALIA, CA - A Magalia man was shot to death after he pointed a handgun at a Butte County sheriff's deputy Thursday night, according to a sheriff's spokeswoman.
The dead man, identified as Wayne Lamar Oxley, 50, called to report hearing gunshots in the area of Bethany Circle and Wycliff Way at approximately 7:30 p.m., said Miranda Bowersox.
Deputy Chris Dineen arrived in response to the call at 7:50 p.m. and reported not hearing any shots. At the same time, Bowersox said Oxley made a second call to say he heard more shots and he wanted to talk to the deputy.
Dineen then radioed in he heard a gunshot. Bowersox said the deputy drove to Oxley's home and as he got out of his patrol unit, Oxley confronted him, pointing a handgun at him and ordering him to give up his weapon.
Fearing for his life, Dineen drew his weapon and fired at Oxley, mortally wounding him, Bowersox said.
The deputy was not injured.
The Butte County Officer Involved Shooting Protocol Team (OIS) is handling the investigation into the shooting.
