NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) - Authorities say a number of guns have been recovered in the wake of a school shooting in Connecticut that left 28 people dead, including 20 children and the gunman, who also killed his mother prior to the massacre.

Police say two handguns were found inside the school and a rifle in the back of a car. Authorities also recovered two rifles and a shotgun, but it's not clear where.

A law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said some of the guns may have belonged to Adam Lanza's family. His mother had legally registered four weapons, his father two.

The rampage in Newton, a prosperous community of about 27,000 people 60 miles northeast of New York City, is the nation's second-deadliest school shooting, exceeded only by the Virginia Tech massacre that claimed 33 lives in 2007.

One parent says people always considered Newton "the safest place in America." A teen whose sister attends the school says "everyone is just traumatized."
