STOCKTON, Calif. - Police officers, sheriff's deputies and officers from state parole and probation have swept through the Stockton area Wednesday and Thursday.

The goal was finding people likely to be capable of committing crimes with the holidays just around the corner.

"Historically, we know these crimes peak during the holidays," San Joaquin County deputy Daryl Labarthe said. "Robberies and burglaries are up, so we combat it before it becomes an issue."

On Wednesday, more than 125 officers called on parolees and probationers to make sure they're following rules. On Thursday, about 100 officers concentrated on traffic stops and suspicious behavior.

The operation was possible because so many agencies loaned bodies to the effort

"Normally, agencies have a lot of calls for service, and with manpower down, can't be as proactive as we'd like," Labarthe said.

Authorities arrested a total of 83 people during the sweep and confiscated 9 pounds of marijuana.
