SACRAMENTO, CA - Sacramento police arrested the uncle of a 5-month-old boy on suspicion of child abuse.

The baby was taken to a Sacramento hospital by his mother Wednesday night after she came home to her apartment on the 2600 block of Truxel Road and found that her son was not waking from his nap, Sacramento police Officer Doug Morse said.

The baby's uncle, Wendell Taghap, 36, was watching the 5-month-old boy while his mother was at work, Morse said. When the mother found her son was unresponsive, she called 911 and he was transported to the hospital.

Morse said the hospital called police after doctors found that the baby's physical abuse was consistent with child abuse. The boy suffered life-threatening injuries and continues to be treated at the hospital.

Thursday night, officers arrested Taghap and booked him into Sacramento County Jail for cruelty to a child under circumstances likely to produce great bodily harm or death.
