Sacramento - Volunteers dug post holes and shoveled dirt to create a brand new garden at Bret Harte Elementary School this national event, Make a Difference Day.

The school broke ground Saturday on their very own student garden.  Crews from Ameri-Corps, SCUSD's Healthy Food Task Force, Sacramento Area Community Garden Coalition and Sierra Health were on hand hoping their hard work would help make the pilot program a success.

The garden will not just teach student how to grow their own produce but also get them excited to learn about healthy habits.

"Our hope is that all children - no matter where they live or what their parents' income - will understand that there are dining choices beyond the fast-food menu," says SCUSD Superintendent Jonathan Raymond. "If we can help children make nutritious choices today, it will affect their health, our nation's economy and the environment in the future."

The Sacramento School Districts started this garden program at Bret Harte hoping all the students will someday follow suit.
