TUSTIN, Calif. - A series of freeway shootings Tuesday in Orange County, Calif., has left four people dead, including the suspect, and two people injured, the Orange County Sheriff's Department said.

Police are still trying to confirm how the shootings are connected, but spokeswoman Gail Krause told USA TODAY the killing spree started in Ladera Ranch before the suspect moved north along the freeway to Tustin.

Police have not identified the suspect.

The shootings began shortly before 4:45 a.m. when deputies responding to a call found the body of a dead female shot multiple times in a house in Ladera Ranch.

The gunman headed north in an SUV, and two more people were fatally shot in the next 25 minutes after carjackings in Tustin and Santa Ana, according to the Orange County Register.

Authorities found at least six crime scenes, Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino told KNBC-TV.

"I do not believe any of the victims are related to each other. It might have been a random thing," he said. "We just don't know."

The alleged shooter shot himself in the middle of an intersection as officers closed in, Tustin police Supervisor Dave Kanoti said.

The conditions of the wounded victims were unknown.
