SAN DIEGO (AP) - Environmentalists say they've spotted a small gray whale with a rope wrapped around its tail near the Imperial Beach pier south of San Diego.

U-T San Diego reports the young whale was diving and surfacing in an attempt to get rid of the fishing-net rope on Friday.

Wildcoast in Imperial Beach Executive Director Serge Dedina says it's likely that Labor Day beachgoers will see more of the gray whale over the holiday weekend.

Dedina says he and a colleague spotted the whale bobbing up and down frantically. Dedina says the rope is about 20 feet long and appears to have made deep cuts.

Dedina says gray whales are usually feeding further north this time of year and the whale is so young it likely won't survive without its mother.
