Cartoon Network's Regular Show is a cartoon that seemingly came out of nowhere to grow a following of an age-diverse viewers.  As with seemingly anything that proves popular enough these days, a tie-in video game inspired by the show came out not too long ago called Regular Show: Mordecai and Rigby in 8-Bit Land.  While this 3DS title boasts a good amount of fan service and shows an appreciation for retro gameplay, it fails to provide much more than a mildly entertaining experience.

The game finds the show's protagonist slackers, blue jay Mordecai and raccoon Rigby, getting quite literally sucked into their video game console.  With writing credit given to series creator J. G. Quintel, one might think that the game will have a good deal of what makes the show so enjoyable for its fans.  Sadly, the story never progresses past the point of "Our heroes are stuck in a game an need to find a way out".  Furthermore, while many of the locations and characters do make appearances, it feels quite disconnected from the cartoon.

Graphically, Regular Show looks fairly good for what it's trying to be.  Too good, actually.  The 8-bit land Mordecai and Rigby were supposed to have been transported to appears more like a late-era 16-bit one.  Simply put, if it's 8-bit land it should look 8-bit and not something one might find on a SEGA Genesis.

Gameplay is much more 8-bit(ish) than the graphics, thankfully.  Much of the game is traditional 2D side-scrolling platforming.  Players can go at it as either character and are able to swap between them by pressing the 'X' button.  Each character has his own skill to bring to the game with Mordecai being able to double-jump (and become a space ship for flying sections) and Rigby being able to fit into small places (he can also be used during the game's few top-down shooter sequences).

Regular Show follows many of the old-school trappings as found in many of the platformers of the late 80's and early 90's including bottomless pits and enemies that pace back and forth.  While that may seem easy to deal with, it does remind players that even the simplest of games can be a challenge.  If nothing else, that's exactly what this game is: challenging.  Unfortunately, it's not always challenging due to its difficulty but rather due to just how spot-on players need to be.  Should Mordecai or Rigby be just a pixel or two off of dead-center when jumping upon an enemy or venture too close to the edge of a drop, prepare to take a hit or lose a life.  It's not game breaking my any means, but it's unfortunate to say the least.

Regular Show: Mordecai and Rigby in 8-Bit Land is a game that, like the cartoon itself, could have gone anywhere at the drop of a hat.  There is so much potential in the source material that it's really a shame that this is the best that D3Publisher could come up with.  Should there ever be another Regular Show video game, we (the audience) deserve better.
