'Killzone: Shadow Fall', a PS4 exclusive from Sony.

When Sony's PlayStation 4 releases near the end of this year, it'll be getting a new edition of developer Guerrilla Games' popular Killzone games.

The sixth such game overall and fourth on console, Killzone: Shadow Fall is set three decades after the events of Killzone 3.  Life on the Helghast home planet has never been worse, yet the fighting persists.  In this game, the Helghast are fighting for the right to exist while the rival Vektan fight for their own survival.  The struggle leads to a "cold war" type of tension between the two races.

"We have this setting - we've got this vast wall between the good guys and the bad guys - a very close proximity with very different ideologies," explains Hermen Hulst, Managing Director at Guerrilla Games.

In the game, players take the roll of a Shadow Marshall.  According to Hulst, he has a lot of new gameplay abilities.  He'll also have bigger maps on which to complete his objectives.

"You're kind of a super solder now - the best of the best," he commented.  "And, of course, we kept everything that made Killzone great in the first place like iconic Helghasts, enemies, great visuals, huge set pieces, all of that.  And then we're layering this new, much more tactical gameplay on top of that."

Additional to the more tactical gameplay that Guerrilla Games is promising, Hurst says Killzone: Shadow Fall will make use of all of the new features being introduced by the PS4's new gamepad.  This includes the use of its clickable touchpad.

"We have this robotic companion that helps you out and gives you an attack mode that lets you zip-line across the map, et cetera," Hulst explained.  "So we'll use the touchpad to control that."

Hulst says the game will also utilize the controller's speaker and headset jack and is personally impressed with its shoulder trigger buttons.

A launch title for Sony's new gaming console, Killzone: Shadow Fall is a very exciting project for its development team.

As Hulst puts it: "I'm over the moon."

Killzone: Shadow Fall uses Guerrilla Games' in-house engine and is currently rated "RP - Rating Pending" by the ESRB.
