Last summer, Nintendo opened their E3 press conference by announcing that the next game in Nintendo's popular Pikmin series was in development for Wii U. Since that time, however, details have been few and far between.
Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata broke that near-silence early Wednesday morning during the company's Nintendo Direct web stream by not only providing more details about the game, but also surprising everybody by publicly stating that the game will be coming out sooner than many had anticipated.
"The game's going to be coming out in North America on August 4th - just a few short months away," stated Nintendo of America's Kit Ellis as he summarized Iwata's announcement. "And also we revealed a new type of Pikmin."
This new Pikmin, known in-game as a Winged Pikmin, will have the ability to fly.
"It adds great implications to the game," Ellis explained. "These Pikmin can actually pick objects up above ground and actually fly them around to different places. They're a great new addition to the game."
He then alluded to the fact that Winged Pikmin will be critical in solving certain puzzles within the game. This new Pikmin breed join the hard-hitting Rock Pikmin as Pikmin 3's two thus-far announced new Pikmin types.
Nintendo's Pikmin 3 video game is a mass-action strategy title in which players will discover a world filled with strange creatures as they take command of a swarm of ant-like Pikmin trying to survive. The game world is densely packed with treasures and enemies, which, according to Nintendo, makes the game much more action focused than the past two games in the series.
While the game's August 4th release is date fast approaching, the ESRB has yet to provide any grading information. The previous two Pikmin titles were rated "E for Everyone".
