Video game publisher NIS America recently announced that the company will be bringing another installment of its popular Disgaea strategy RPG series, Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness, to North American and European PlayStation 3's this fall.

Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness is being developed as a direct sequel to the original Disgaea from ten years ago.  Nippon Ichi President Souhei Nikawa says this is because of the staying power that the three protagonists from the original game have even after three numerical sequels.

"Even though we've done four games up until now, even now the main three characters of the first game -- Laharl...Flonne and Etna -- are still incredibly popular," Nikawa commented.  "And so it's kind of a present to the fans and as a way to kind of thank them for all their hard work and their support over the years."

Those who pick up this game when it comes out in the latter half of 2013 will find that Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness has its fair share of Disgaea fan service scattered throughout the game.  Nikawa says this is quite intentional.

"The only way we've been able to come so far in these ten years is because of the support of our fans and all the love and support they give us," the NIS President explained.  "So, this is a kind of 'thank you' note to them and something to give back to them for all they've given us."

All of the support that fans have given Nippon Ichi and its Disgaea franchise wasn't exactly expected.  In fact, Nikawa states the company was actually caught off guard by the game series' eventual following.

"We were actually surprised that it's lasted this long," he told News10's Game Guys.  "But we really feel that every time we put out a game we think first and foremost 'What can we do to make the fans happy?  What can we do to make a game that they can enjoy?'.  And that's the approach we take from every aspect of any new Disgaea."

That stated, Nippon Ichi Software has revealed that Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness will offer game system refinements that the company believes will entice new fans to join the franchise's following while still offering the same kind of hardcore, over-the-top gameplay that longtime fans would expect from such a game.

Because this game was only publicly revealed within the past week, the ESRB has not yet posted an age rating for it.
