Sony is hosting a video game focused event next month, and all signs point to an unveiling of the successor to the PlayStation 3.

A post on Sony's official PlayStation blog titled "See The Future" and the message "Be the first to know." The post also highlights a mysterious video teasing a Feb. 20 event that features the signature shapes appearing on buttons of a PlayStation controller.

The event could serve as video game players' first look at what many are dubbing the "PlayStation 4," Sony's long-awaited new home video game console.

Sony's event likely marks the next step toward transition in the video game industry, which has experienced drooping sales in part because of a lack of new hardware. Sony launched the PlayStation 3 in 2006, marking more than 7 years at retail. The average lifespan of a video game console is about 4-5 years.

Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter says Sony could launch the next PlayStation "in October or November" of this year, and it's likely a device replacing rival console Xbox 360 will follow soon after.

"Microsoft plans on a 2013 launch, but I don't think they'll be destroyed if they do a 2014 launch," says Pachter. "I don't think they care if they come out in February."

Meanwhile, Nintendo has already made the leap into the next console cycle, launching the Wii U last November. The company finished 2012 selling 890,000 consoles.
