'FIFA 13' from EA Sports.
The release of the Wii U (Nintendo's next home video game console) looms; as does the list of its launch titles. Much to the delight of many sports video game fans, EA Sports' FIFA 13 will be among those titles. Matt Prior, Line Producer on the game, speculates that the Wii U version will give a gameplay experience superior to that of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
"It is a superior architect from the Xbox360/PS3,", Prior said to News10 Game Guy Barry White during the 2012 EA Summer Showcase last week. "So, we were able to bring some of the brand-new features that are in that this year simply because we're building a game and, just like when building anything, you have to have a solid foundation on which to build."
He then pointed out that due to the Wii U's different technology, FIFA 13 development for the console had to split off of the PS3/360 development.
"[FIFA 13 is] not 12, it's not 13 -- we're kind of somewhere in-between with the core engine," he explained. "Of course obviously on top of that we have the Wii U specific functionality which really enhances the game above that."
These features include the ability to not only use the Wii U tablet controller to traditionally play FIFA 13, but also to shoot on goal through its touch screen similar to how it worked on the PlayStation Vita with FIFA 12. Players can also use the touch screen in manager mode to control the players in a semi-hands-off manner, as well as do personnel substitutions, and execute tap-and-pass mechanics to move the ball around the pitch. Those wanting nothing to do with the console's touch and motion-based control schemes shouldn't be discouraged from playing FIFA 13 on the Wii U, as the game also supports the Wii U Pro controller and the Remote/Nunchuk setup (the latter with limited functionality due to having fewer buttons).
"We've kept all of the gameplay functionality, so if you have a friend who has a PS3 and he comes over to play on Wii U, he doesn't have to re-learn the game," Prior said.
EA Sports' FIFA 13 is scheduled for release on all platforms except for Wii U on September 25, 2012. Being that the Wii U version is a launch title, EA cannot comment on its release date until Nintendo reveals to the public when the Wii U itself will become available.
FIFA 13 is rated "E for Everyone" by the ESRB.
