Girl power takes hold with Ubisoft's upcoming PlayStation Vita exclusive title Assassin's Creed III: Liberation.  Just announced at E3 2012, Liberation will feature the franchise's first-ever female protagonist.

From what can be derived from the hands-off presentation during Sony's 2012 E3 press briefing, Assassin's Creed III: Liberation will take place in the same time period as the previously announced core Assassin's Creed III title does -- Colonial America during the American Revolutionary War against Great Britain.  Unlike the home console core title, Liberation will feature touch-sensative controles by taking advantage of the Vita's front touchscreen and rear touchpad.  The handheld console's camera and Near functionality will also be utilized by the game software.

"Liberation will also utilize cross-goods between it and Assassin's Creed III on PlayStation 3," said Jack Tretton, President of Sony Computer Entertainment America.  "When you link the two titles, you will unlock Conner's tomahawk, an exclusive character skin, a multiplayer character, and a complete upgrade of ammunition pouches."

According to Tretton, Ubisoft is building Liberation from the ground-up specifically for PlayStation Vita.  Having Ubisoft do this rather than adapting the home console version of the core Assassins's Creed III game should prove to be the right descision as it should take better advantage of the Vita's unique hardware capabilities and feel more like a portable game title than a home console one.  The game looks quite promising and it will be interesting to see what other details come out between E3 and the game's launch later this year.

Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed III: Liberation will be released on October 30th, 2012, as both a stand-alone game and a PlayStation Vita bundle.  The bundle includes the game software along with a Crystal White Wi-Fi Vita (the first time such a color will be available), and a 4GB memory card.
