SACRAMENTO, CA - Mayor Kevin Johnson said he is optimistically working with investors to purchase the Sacramento Kings franchise from the Maloof Family, the team's current owners

Johnson talked to news media for nearly 8 minutes at halftime during the Kings victory over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night.

Reportedly the Maloofs are in talks with potential deep-pocketed investors in Seattle to sell and relocate the team to the Emerald City.

Johnson said there is more than one "whale" still out there regards to local ownership group(s).

When asked what Johnson hopes to have in place before February's NBA All-Star Weekend in Houston, he said, "I'd hope to believe we'd have our ownership group in place and on track to be competitive going into the filing deadline, March 1."

March 1 is the NBA Board of Governors meeting where Johnson will attempt to demonstrate that Sacramento has a new ownership group in place and a completed viable arena deal to house the team.

"David Stern (and) the owners - they know how powerful this market is," Johnson said. "They know it's special."

AEG has said they remain committed to the framework deal that the city and the Maloofs agreed to last February arena.
