UNDATED (AP) - The director of "The Dark Knight Rises" says he's devastated by the "senseless tragedy" at a Colorado theater, where a gunman killed 12 people and injured 59 during a midnight showing of the film.

Christopher Nolan offered the "profound sorrow" of the cast and crew of the film to the victims and their families.

Nolan says movies are one of the great American art forms. He says "the shared experience of watching a story unfold on screen is an important and joyful pastime." And Nolan says he's devastated that someone would violate an "innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way."

Police arrested a suspect in the shootings, 24-year-old James Holmes, who lives four miles from the Aurora theater. They've found his apartment booby-trapped.
