MODESTO, CA - He plays for one of the most prestigious college basketball programs in the country, and now Reeves Nelson will be all over the West Coast.

The former three-sport star at Modesto Christian appears on one of Sports Illustrated's five regional covers for its college basketball preview that comes out this week.

On his Twitter feed (@reezyf22), Nelson tweeted, "It's weird. People say I should be proud. I'm humbled tho. People say hard work pays off. But I just want to work harder now. Ambition."

He joins some very select company.  The other covers look like a who's who of the nation's best college basketball players:  Harrison Barnes of North Carolina, Terrence Jones of Kentucky, Thomas Robinson of Kansas and Jeremy Lamb of Connecticut.

The Sports Illustrated cover is just the latest in a long line of achievements for Nelson.

He's a junior for the Bruins and the team's starting power forward.  Last year he helped lead UCLA to the third round of the NCAA Tournament while leading the Bruins in scoring (13.9 points per game) and rebounding (9.1 per game).

During high school, Nelson was named first-team All-Trans Valley League three times and twice earned All-State honors as a junior and senior at Modesto Christian.

His Modesto Christian teams posted an overall record of 109-24 in his four years at the school, and won four Sac-Joaquin Section championships.  The team also reached the Nor-Cal championship game three times.

The UCLA Bruins kick off their season Friday with a game against Loyola Marymount.
