It's one of the more familiar sayings credited to Jerry Brown -- the adage, slightly tweaked over the years, that politics is like paddling a canoe... a little left, a little right, to end up going straight down the middle.
But on some issues these days, Brown's canoe seems to be pushing hard to paddle upstream.
